METLEN and Dolomiti Energia inaugurate the Erchie BESS in Puglia

Una nuova tappa per lo sviluppo dell’accumulo energetico e per la transizione energetica in Italia
25 settembre 2026

Trento, 25 September 2026 – METLEN and Dolomiti Energia inaugurated the new 25 MW/75 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Erchie, Puglia. The commissioning marks a new milestone for a project first presented earlier this year, when the two companies signed a seven-year physical tolling agreement. Among the first agreements of its kind in the Italian energy storage market, the agreement introduces an advanced commercial model that combines long-term use of the infrastructure with the provision of essential flexibility services to the electricity grid.

Developed and built entirely by METLEN, the project supports greater integration of renewable energy sources and contributes to strengthening the stability of the Italian electricity system. As a stand-alone system, it provides flexibility to the grid and holds a Capacity Market contract with Terna, demonstrating METLEN and Dolomiti Energia’s shared commitment to developing innovative, long-term energy solutions.

It is worth noting that the Erchie BESS is one of the first large-scale plants to become operational in Italy, as well as the first energy storage project connected to the local substation.

The inauguration took place on 24 September in the presence of representatives of local administrations and institutions, partners and representatives of both companies.

At the inauguration, Aris Spiropoulos, Managing Director Central Europe at METLEN, highlighted the central role of energy storage in the next phase of renewable energy growth. As he noted, “the challenge is no longer only about generating energy from renewable sources, but also about ensuring that this energy is available when families, businesses and local communities need it.” He also highlighted the importance of the partnership with Dolomiti Energia and of all the stakeholders who contributed to the development of the project, noting that “the energy transition requires collaboration, trust and a shared long-term vision.”

“The inauguration of the Erchie BESS marks the completion of a project developed through close collaboration between METLEN and Dolomiti Energia,” said Maurizio Lancerin, Energy Management Director at Dolomiti Energia. “Energy storage is becoming an increasingly important component of the electricity system, supporting its flexibility and operational management. This initiative reflects our commitment to developing long-term partnerships with companies and operators seeking reliable and efficient energy management solutions, applying our expertise to combine knowledge of energy markets with innovative infrastructure solutions capable of meeting the evolving needs of the energy sector.”

METLEN’s presence in Italy

METLEN’s activities in Italy include more than 130 projects, with a total capacity of over 3 GW across 15 of the country’s 20 regions. In Puglia in particular, METLEN has established a significant presence through photovoltaic and energy storage projects with a total capacity of more than 0.5 GW at different stages of development: approximately 0.1 GW in operation, 0.2 GW under construction and 0.3 GW under development.

With the Erchie BESS now fully operational, METLEN is translating its strong presence in Puglia into a tangible energy footprint and further strengthening its role in the Italian market. The project is an example of the company’s model, combining technical expertise, innovative commercial partnerships and close dialogue with local communities to accelerate the development of strategic energy storage infrastructure in Italy and internationally.
